Double cleansing | Does it work?

Double cleansing: a term I’ve never heard of until a few weeks ago.

When I looked up what double cleansing meant, I was surprised to learn I was already doing it!

According to an article I read from the TODAY Show, it’s a two-step process where you first wash your face with an oil-based cleanser, then again with a water-based cleanser.

The oil-based cleansing balm will remove any makeup, dirt, and excess oils from deep into your pores!

Sounds great right? But, does it work?

My answer is yes! I’ve definitely noticed a huge difference in both how my skin looks and feels after double-cleansing. I’ve also noticed fewer breakouts around my chin, which is where they tend to appear these days. My face also looks brighter, and just cleaner!

Now, even when I’m tired, I ALWAYS make sure to do my complete cleansing routine!

Here’s a look at the products I use:

  • I start out with Clinique’s Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm. For a while, I was ONLY using this to remove my makeup and cleanse my face.. I definitely had makeup leftover on my face, but didn’t do anything about it.
  • A few months into this year, I started to use Cetaphil’s Daily Facial Cleanser after the cleansing balm. I was amazed at how good my skin felt afterward.
  • This would complete the double-cleansing process, but I recently started to add in a sample of Lancôme’s Creme Mousse Confort face wash. I didn’t think I would care for it much, but I LOVE it! I think I even get the full-size product once I’m out of my sample!

In a way, it seems like I may be TRIPLE washing my face, but I kind of count the cleansing balm and water-based cleanser as one step, with the Lancôme cleanser being my second. It works for me and my face doesn’t feel irritated.

In the end, double-cleansing will forever be a part of my skincare system. It’s been great for my skin! Let me know which facial cleansers are your favorite!

My 2024 Double-Cleansing Routine

If you’re one of my YouTube subscribers, you may have already seen my video on my new double-cleansing routine. However, I thought it may be helpful to have a blog post about it, with some written details – for all my blog lovers out there!

My last blog post about this was four years ago, so you’re definitely due for an updated look at my new routine! Good news: it’s been simplified!

So, what is double-cleansing?

Double-cleansing is a two-step process where you first wash your face with an oil-based cleanser, then again with a water-based cleanser.

Who should double-cleanse?

From how I understand it, double-cleansing is beneficial for anyone with oily or acne-prone skin, and anyone who wears heavy makeup. I myself, have oily skin and used to wear heavy makeup, but have greatly simplified my makeup routine recently. Today, I still continue to double-cleanse – I don’t think I can stop! But here’s why: I wear a ton of sunscreen (hello, melasma) and will even reapply it throughout the day using powder sunscreen. I’ll also usually wear some makeup over my sunscreen. Combine all that with my oily skin – double-cleansing is a must for me.

How I double-cleanse

What used to be a routine containing 2-3 products, is now down to one product: One cleanser! I also take it one step further and have started incorporating my Nu Skin Lumispa (check out my blog post all about it here).

My first step is using this Soft Wash from Dr. Idriss on my dry face. What I like about the Soft Wash is that it feels like a mix of my Clinique Take the Day Off cleansing balm and a water-based cleanser, all in one. After massaging the cleanser all over my face, you can see your makeup start to melt off. After that, I rinse my face with water and continue to massage the cleanser all over my face.

My face feels pretty clean afterward and doesn’t feel stripped of my natural moisture. This cleanser is also great if you wear contacts or glasses, as it won’t sting your eyes when you open them (to check if you’ve covered your whole face!). Afterward, I dry my face with a dedicated face towel. I like this 12-pack of face towels from Amazon.

My second step is using the same cleanser, but washing my face with my Nu Skin LumiSpa. I’ll squeeze some cleanser on my LumiSpa, and dab it on the four quadrants of my face. I’ll then get a little bit of water on my LumiSpa, and then begin working it around my face – a total of two minutes! What comes off, is insane! Even if all I wore that day is tinted sunscreen, my “dirt swipe” from my LumiSpa is very brown. That reason alone, is why I can’t stop using my Lumi. I’ve got some before and afters of using my Lumi on that blog post linked above.

After being disgusted with my face, I rinse my face again and dry it off with a face towel. It is then, when I begin my nighttime skincare routine. Yes, I only double-cleanse at night!

While double-cleansing can be a process, sticking to only one cleanser that is gentle, yet powerful, can be life-changing for your skin! I absolutely recommend you give it a try if you have a similar skin type to mine.

Let me know how you double-cleanse and what your favorite products are!

My Top 5 Beauty Must-Haves

I hope you’re all having a great holiday weekend! This week, I wanted to bring you all my top 5 beauty must-haves. Once I find products that are actually effective, I continuously buy them. I feel like so many products hold broken promises, so it’s always nice when you find one that actually works.

  1. Revitalash Eyelash Serum & Conditioner – I’ve been using this serum for more than a year now, and it’s a normal part of my daily beauty routine. I have this blog post where I share the results I saw each month when I first started using it – this might be different for you, maybe you’ll see length first, and then the curl effect. Regardless, I’m very happy with Revitalash and won’t use another serum!
  2. Smashbox Halo Tinted Moisturizer – This is a newer product for me, but I am in LOVE with it! I love how light and airy it feels on the ski, as well as the coverage you get out of this tinted moisturizer. It’s perfect for summer and really gives off a nice glow! Match it up with a powder and bronzer and you’ve got the lightest makeup day.
  3. Moisturizing body lotion – My favorite body lotions are from Bath and Body Works – they have the best scents and they’re very moisturizing. I always stock up when BBW is having a sale – which I highly recommend!
  4. NYX Eyebrow Pencil – Eyebrow pencils are my favorite and I love the ones from NYX. I use it every day and my eyebrows always look soft and put together.
  5. Good cleansers – aka a good cleansing system. You may remember my blog post on the double cleansing method – which I still use today. This system is really effective and I believe it’s helped my skin stay clear since I started incorporating it in my daily beauty routine. I use the Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm from Clinique and the cleanser from CeraVe

Best Sellers | May 29 – June 5

Last week brings us a majority of top sellers from Amazon!

First off, we have this wrap skirt. It’s perfect for summer and is very flattering. I have it in a size small.

These square-shaped sunglasses are one of the newest in my collection and I love how it just finishes any look!

Next, this eyelash comb is perfect for combing out your lashes before and after mascara. It’s really helped separate my lashes and even helps to give my lashes a fuller look since they’re all evenly flared out. I’m so glad I found this product!

The Clinique Take the Day Off cleansing balm is my absolute favorite. It does an amazing job at melting your makeup off. I use the double cleansing method, which really helps clear my skin of all my makeup and oils. You can read more about it here. Oh! The BOGO sale on QVC is still going on! It’s so worth it!

Lastly, this Skims dress is such an easy go-to outfit. I love wearing it by itself for lounging at home, or you can add a denim jacket to add to the look and run errands. It’s so versatile and comfortable!

I hope you all have a great week!

Top 5 Summer Skincare Must-Haves

The weather in Montana has officially reached the 80s and I wanted to share my summer skincare must-haves!

Skincare is something I wish I took a little more seriously years ago when I was in college. I went to the University of Arizona, a very large campus, and I walked all across campus to class, five days a week – all without sunscreen. Can you believe it?! Of course, back then, I didn’t have all the sun/dark spots I have now, so the thought of them happening to me never came to mind! Now, at 32, my skin is different and I realize the importance of proper skincare and protecting your skin from all potential harm – all to help age gracefully!

This list is just a basic reference and doesn’t include any extras. This is just a list of what I’ve found works well for me. Here are my top five summer skincare must-haves:

1. Sunscreen

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it over and over again – sunscreen is a major must!! While sunscreen is on my summer skincare must-have list, it’s something you should be using year-round! If you take only one piece of advice from this blog post, I hope it’s implementing sunscreen in your skincare routine, if you don’t yet. My favorite ones are from Supergoop – They have a huge variety, but I love their Unseen Sunscreen and their powder sunscreen for touch-ups throughout the day. I also just ordered this facial spray sunscreen – I’ll keep you updated on how I like it!

2. Moisturizer

Just because you have oily skin, doesn’t mean you need to skip out on moisturizer! It took me a long time to understand this because I’ve always had oily skin. In fact, it used to be a lot worse than it is today because I used to not do anything about it! There is so much a dermatologist can you help out with in terms of your skincare routine, or targeting areas you’re concerned about. I’m picky about my moisturizers – my favorite ones are the ones that melt on your face and leave your skin feeling soft, smooth, and of course, moisturized. My favorite is this one from Neutrogena, but if I want to splurge, I love this one from Lancome.

3. Cleanser

It took me a while to get a good cleansing routine down – you have to understand what works best for your skin! When I worked in TV news, I would pile on the makeup (I still do most days!), so I needed a cleansing that would ensure a deep clean for my pores. In order to get that, I use the double-cleansing method. First, I use an oil-based cleanser to remove all my makeup and dirt from the day, then I use a water-based cleanser to ensure all of it comes off! This method works best on my skin. Check out my blog post all about it here (I’ve since switched my cleanser to CeraVe). Here are my double-cleansing products: Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm and CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser.

4. Toner

For a while, I didn’t think toner did much – I really wondered, “what’s the point?” Now, I understand it further cleans your skin – removing anything else left behind after your cleansing routine. I personally noticed a major difference when I switched to the double cleansing method – I saw less and less being left behind on my cotton round! I don’t splurge on toners, and usually use this one from Thayers. My favorite is the cucumber-scented one. It’s very gentle and doesn’t dry my face out.

5. Moisture Spray

Okay, this one is just something to refresh you – moisture spray! I love the feeling of spraying on setting spray after putting makeup on, and I was excited when I found this Moisture Surge spray from Clinique. First of all, I’m a huge fan of Clinique’s Moisture Surge Hydrator (it was a big help during my maskne incident), so I knew this spray would also be effective. I got a sample of it in an order and found it to be so useful in the summer, or anytime my skin needed some hydration.

I hope you found my list helpful! Let me know what changes you’re making to your skincare routine this summer!

Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask | Review

Earlier this week, I bought the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay. I’ve heard so many positive things about it, that I knew I just had to buy it when I saw it at Target!

I thought the clay was already pre-mixed and ready to use as a mask, but you actually have to mix it with water or raw apple cider vinegar. I personally hate apple cider vinegar, so I used water.

What I love about the clay is that you use it in a way that works for you. So, you can leave on your face for five minutes, or even as long as 20 minutes! And you really feel your face pulsate! The tightening and lift you feel from the mask is unreal – it’s strong! But don’t worry, it’s not painful.

Immediately afterward, my face felt smooth and soft – better than any other beauty mask I’ve used. Yes, other beauty masks give me smooth and soft skin afterward, but this was different – like next level.

I definitely recommend this mask to anyone looking for a deeper facial cleanse and softer skin. The instructions say you can use it once a week or more often for problematic skin – I’ll be using it two to three times a week. I’m really hoping to see a difference in my pores after longer use of the clay. I’ll make sure to keep you updated on this too!
