My 2024 Double-Cleansing Routine

If you’re one of my YouTube subscribers, you may have already seen my video on my new double-cleansing routine. However, I thought it may be helpful to have a blog post about it, with some written details – for all my blog lovers out there!

My last blog post about this was four years ago, so you’re definitely due for an updated look at my new routine! Good news: it’s been simplified!

So, what is double-cleansing?

Double-cleansing is a two-step process where you first wash your face with an oil-based cleanser, then again with a water-based cleanser.

Who should double-cleanse?

From how I understand it, double-cleansing is beneficial for anyone with oily or acne-prone skin, and anyone who wears heavy makeup. I myself, have oily skin and used to wear heavy makeup, but have greatly simplified my makeup routine recently. Today, I still continue to double-cleanse – I don’t think I can stop! But here’s why: I wear a ton of sunscreen (hello, melasma) and will even reapply it throughout the day using powder sunscreen. I’ll also usually wear some makeup over my sunscreen. Combine all that with my oily skin – double-cleansing is a must for me.

How I double-cleanse

What used to be a routine containing 2-3 products, is now down to one product: One cleanser! I also take it one step further and have started incorporating my Nu Skin Lumispa (check out my blog post all about it here).

My first step is using this Soft Wash from Dr. Idriss on my dry face. What I like about the Soft Wash is that it feels like a mix of my Clinique Take the Day Off cleansing balm and a water-based cleanser, all in one. After massaging the cleanser all over my face, you can see your makeup start to melt off. After that, I rinse my face with water and continue to massage the cleanser all over my face.

My face feels pretty clean afterward and doesn’t feel stripped of my natural moisture. This cleanser is also great if you wear contacts or glasses, as it won’t sting your eyes when you open them (to check if you’ve covered your whole face!). Afterward, I dry my face with a dedicated face towel. I like this 12-pack of face towels from Amazon.

My second step is using the same cleanser, but washing my face with my Nu Skin LumiSpa. I’ll squeeze some cleanser on my LumiSpa, and dab it on the four quadrants of my face. I’ll then get a little bit of water on my LumiSpa, and then begin working it around my face – a total of two minutes! What comes off, is insane! Even if all I wore that day is tinted sunscreen, my “dirt swipe” from my LumiSpa is very brown. That reason alone, is why I can’t stop using my Lumi. I’ve got some before and afters of using my Lumi on that blog post linked above.

After being disgusted with my face, I rinse my face again and dry it off with a face towel. It is then, when I begin my nighttime skincare routine. Yes, I only double-cleanse at night!

While double-cleansing can be a process, sticking to only one cleanser that is gentle, yet powerful, can be life-changing for your skin! I absolutely recommend you give it a try if you have a similar skin type to mine.

Let me know how you double-cleanse and what your favorite products are!

Top 5 Summer Skincare Must-Haves

The weather in Montana has officially reached the 80s and I wanted to share my summer skincare must-haves!

Skincare is something I wish I took a little more seriously years ago when I was in college. I went to the University of Arizona, a very large campus, and I walked all across campus to class, five days a week – all without sunscreen. Can you believe it?! Of course, back then, I didn’t have all the sun/dark spots I have now, so the thought of them happening to me never came to mind! Now, at 32, my skin is different and I realize the importance of proper skincare and protecting your skin from all potential harm – all to help age gracefully!

This list is just a basic reference and doesn’t include any extras. This is just a list of what I’ve found works well for me. Here are my top five summer skincare must-haves:

1. Sunscreen

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it over and over again – sunscreen is a major must!! While sunscreen is on my summer skincare must-have list, it’s something you should be using year-round! If you take only one piece of advice from this blog post, I hope it’s implementing sunscreen in your skincare routine, if you don’t yet. My favorite ones are from Supergoop – They have a huge variety, but I love their Unseen Sunscreen and their powder sunscreen for touch-ups throughout the day. I also just ordered this facial spray sunscreen – I’ll keep you updated on how I like it!

2. Moisturizer

Just because you have oily skin, doesn’t mean you need to skip out on moisturizer! It took me a long time to understand this because I’ve always had oily skin. In fact, it used to be a lot worse than it is today because I used to not do anything about it! There is so much a dermatologist can you help out with in terms of your skincare routine, or targeting areas you’re concerned about. I’m picky about my moisturizers – my favorite ones are the ones that melt on your face and leave your skin feeling soft, smooth, and of course, moisturized. My favorite is this one from Neutrogena, but if I want to splurge, I love this one from Lancome.

3. Cleanser

It took me a while to get a good cleansing routine down – you have to understand what works best for your skin! When I worked in TV news, I would pile on the makeup (I still do most days!), so I needed a cleansing that would ensure a deep clean for my pores. In order to get that, I use the double-cleansing method. First, I use an oil-based cleanser to remove all my makeup and dirt from the day, then I use a water-based cleanser to ensure all of it comes off! This method works best on my skin. Check out my blog post all about it here (I’ve since switched my cleanser to CeraVe). Here are my double-cleansing products: Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm and CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser.

4. Toner

For a while, I didn’t think toner did much – I really wondered, “what’s the point?” Now, I understand it further cleans your skin – removing anything else left behind after your cleansing routine. I personally noticed a major difference when I switched to the double cleansing method – I saw less and less being left behind on my cotton round! I don’t splurge on toners, and usually use this one from Thayers. My favorite is the cucumber-scented one. It’s very gentle and doesn’t dry my face out.

5. Moisture Spray

Okay, this one is just something to refresh you – moisture spray! I love the feeling of spraying on setting spray after putting makeup on, and I was excited when I found this Moisture Surge spray from Clinique. First of all, I’m a huge fan of Clinique’s Moisture Surge Hydrator (it was a big help during my maskne incident), so I knew this spray would also be effective. I got a sample of it in an order and found it to be so useful in the summer, or anytime my skin needed some hydration.

I hope you found my list helpful! Let me know what changes you’re making to your skincare routine this summer!

JUNO & Co. | JUNOSKIN Cleansing Balm | Review

My office in our new home is almost complete! It feels great to have a space dedicated to the work on my blog – I’ll be sure to show you the finished look!

This week’s blog post is all about JUNOSKIN. I’m fairly new to JUNO & Co. and I’ve been enjoying learning about the company, which makes affordable skincare and makeup.

I reviewed their Moonshine Miracle Cream a while ago, which I think is comparable to SmashBox’s Photofinish primer.

If you’re new or just getting started with cleansing balms, I highly recommend checking out JUNOSKIN’s Clean 10 Cleansing balm.

It’s so incredibly silky and quickly melts in your fingers. It makes your makeup removal process so smooth and easy. Because it’s so silky, I was expecting it to leave a little bit of grease behind, but it doesn’t!

I’d say it’s comparable to Clinique’s Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm. The big difference is that JUNOSKIN’s balm is silkier, has a very mild scent, and has dark spot brightening properties! That’s something that really sparked my interest in this product, as I have numerous dark spots I’ve been working to brighten.

My 2020 Skincare Routine

I was never the best at face washing – it takes up too much time! But I always thought, “Hey, I did it, so we’re good.” Even if it was just a simple wash or a makeup wipe.

I recently started my skincare journey with the goal of getting clearer, smoother skin with improved texture. So, I would say I really started to take better care of my skin at the end/beginning of 2020. Finally, at 30 I realized skincare is important!

A simple skincare regimen was all I thought I needed. I thought, “Why put all that product on my face? Isn’t that too much?” Now, after careful and lengthy research, I realize there’s a reason for each step.
